Dedicated to restoring areas in critical need of reforestation, the Davis Lab Group, Institute for Community Partnership and Sustainable Development (ICPSD), and University of Idaho’s Center for Forest Nursery and Seedling Research are collaborating to send faculty, researchers, and students to develop a native plant nursery in Togo, Africa. A local women’s cooperative will be trained to staff the nursery. By exchanging knowledge, skills and resources among partners, the Togo Native Plant Nursery Project has the potential to create positive and sustainable growth for the community and the environment.
Project Goals
- Conduct research that will improve plant regeneration success, conservation and the restoration of native plants and their habitats.
- Build local partnerships among multiple public and private organizations.
- Grow and plant a diversity of tree species native to the area.
- Engage local staff in native tree growth and planting, long-term tree care and project-monitoring activities.
- Promote project visibility through educational outreach, tours and other events.
ICPSD will sign cooperative agreements with Entreprise Territoire et Developpement (EPD), the largest locally-owned NGO that specializes in rural development, and le Laboratoire de Recherche sur la Pauvrete et la securite Alimentaire Durable (LARPSAD), a public think-tank engaged in socio-economic studies for sustainable development.
